Spring Comes

05/06/2021

This short poem is titled "Spring Comes." It connects to the theme of uncertain times because it uses the metaphor of Spring to talk about perseverance through difficult times in life. During this pandemic, it has seemed like we are all trapped and waiting for better times to finally come in order to live our lives, kind of like how people feel during long winters when they are waiting for better weather. The poem suggests that maybe we are all strong enough to keep going and keep living even when things seem dark and cold and the end is not in sight, but also reassures people that spring is always going to come.

Spring comes and listens raptly when she hears our cries for sunshine

When she hears the frost-soaked blades and branches cracking in the wind

She knows our core is molten and heat rests beneath the surface

And no endless Februaries cause her faith to come unpinned

What would happen if she weren't so hasty sweeping down the winter halls?

Would bulbs nestle down eternally and buds begin to shrink?

Would birds forget their voices as their nests of twigs lay barren?

Would the flurries get their second wind and verdure turn to drink?

Spring, like a doting mother hen, does not let us bear this witness

Hiding us beneath her wing and sheltering our youthful eyes

Maybe she fears what would happen if she were to let us wander

Maybe we'd go on without her, maybe we'd take to the skies

Maybe we, persistent flowers, would raise our heads and plant our roots,

Growing in the darkness like we grow beneath the light

Maybe we, the little robins, would leap the edge and catch the gales,

Prospering in sorrow just like feasting in delight

Maybe if we were neglected by Spring and promised better times

Maybe if dread like snow descended and our planted hopes could never sprout

Maybe we'd go on regardless, raising courage, braving weather

But how fortunate for all of us we'll never be forced to find out
