Plucking Out the Thorns: Laughable Disasters

Our theme refers to moving on past tough times to look to a brighter future. This year's works reflect hope, resilience, and movement towards a better tomorrow.

This piece is a self-portrait of myself using representative subject matter and abstract imagery. The colors spilling out of my head are my ideas and dreams, hence the title, "Gathering My Thoughts." The colors spilling directly out of my head are more space-like as they are abstract, whereas everything below it is more defined and random. The...
This illustration was originally to be a design on a DJ I was tasked with painting. However, due to COVID, its design became a final drawing assignment. This design is made to fit the different forms of each duck within their contours for an organic composition.
Medium: digital
These paintings are still lifes and anatomy studies of a woman's torso. The first is done with standard oil paint brushes, but the second is done with the back of an Aquaphor lip balm squeeze tube. This assignment was a challenge of using unconventional items as our utensil (it was much more challenging than expected) Medium: oil on canvas board...
I was inspired to write this poem by one of my favorite artists, @av.scibs on Instagram. I'd been following their work for a while, and I love all of the potential in "Boundless Dreams." I really connect with the character depicted in the artwork (Viktor from the Netflix series Arcane) because of the immense pressure he puts himself under...
My art is almost always about exploring the pain that floats around and within me. So this prompt was a challenge to say the least. In this piece, I focused on what I have been trying to do with myself, when I see myself in the mirror and begin accepting whoever is there to meet me. My thorns are the...

Progress

I wrote this poem last semester when I was training for the half marathon in Kansas City. I thought that it fit this year's theme of "Plucking out the Thorns" because running gave me an outlet and led to some incredible things I wouldn't have gotten to experience otherwise, even if some days it was rough to get out of...

Sonnet for Nyx

04/18/2022
My poem consists of my struggling emotions with having to re-home my cat after getting evicted from my old house. My cat, Nyx, was adopted when she was only a few weeks old, so I have seen her grow up. Though, knowing she is safe with someone I trust makes the thorns worth the pain and makes me smile when...
I decided to focus on the thorns aspect of the theme. My first poem, a haiku called "Stained Glass", has thorns for me. I have always had a complicated relationship with religion and it has been an area of contention between me and the rest of my family. However, I have always been fascinated by stained glass pieces in churches...

Safe

04/18/2022
I used pencil and pen to create a piece about vulnerability and the illusion of safety. While being vulnerable in what is labeled as a safe space, you have to hope that said space was designed in a way to not use that vulnerability against you. In this piece, though the door does open from both sides, there is no...
"The Magic Microwave" arose from my quarantine musings and is about letting go and accepting the strangeness that is life. I think most of the world feels out of control these days, especially with a global pandemic that seems to have no end. These feelings of uncertainty and helplessness inspired me to write the main character, George, who feels...
